Fields view
The Fields view displays the data fields that are defined in N4 for the scope that you are logged in to and that are actually used in the user interface. Because this list includes UI fields only, all of these fields have a Long Name and a Short Name defined (unlike the Metafield Diagnostic views for the business tier and UI tier). These fields are used to display data in the various forms and list views in N4. The columns in the Fields view display the properties, such as Field ID, Short Name, Long Name, and Group, of a field.
Any changes you make to a field in this view apply to the ULC and the business tier if the field is used in both tiers.
By default, the Fields view displays all the flex fields (on page 1) that are available in N4. You can use the Display menu to control which fields are listed in the Fields view:
Show All: Displays all available fields
Show Custom Fields: Displays only the flex fields
Show Measurement Fields: Displays only the measurement fields, such as length, weight, or temperature
In addition, you can use the Actions menu to:
Export SNX File: Export the selected fields as an XML file using the snx.xsd format
Reset: Propagate the changes that were made to a field to the forms and list views where the field is used
For example, if you change the Long Label for a field, you must select Actions Reset to view the changes in the form where N4 displays the field.
N4 executes the Reset action only on the current node where you are logged in. If you have installed N4 in a cluster, you must execute the Reset action on each node so that the changes are propagated to all the instances of N4 in the cluster.
You can use the Edit Metafield form (on page 1) to edit the following characteristics of a field that is defined in N4:
Short Name: The column label for the field in a list view.
Long Name: The label for the field in a data entry form.
Help Text: A brief description of the selected field that is displayed as a tool tip in a data entry form.
In a form in N4, place the cursor over a field to view the help text that is specified for the field. The help text appears for a few seconds and then disappears.
We recommend that you enter a short description in the Help Text field.
Display Unit: The measurement unit that N4 displays as part of the field label in a data entry form or a column name in a list view.
When a user enters data in a measurement field, such as the Gross Weight of a container or the Minimum Temperature for a reefer, N4 uses the Display Unit as the default unit for data entry.
N4 uses the Stored Unit that is specified for a measurement field to store data in the database.
You cannot edit the Stored Unit for a measurement field.
Max Characters: The maximum number of characters allowed. The integer can be smaller than the database column length.
Case Validation: The case validation enforced for this field, such as lower case, upper case, or mixed. In N4, the default case validation for all fields is UPPER.
Group ID: The group under which a field is listed in the user interface (flex fields only). For more information, see Location of flex fields (on page 1) in the N4 Customization manual.
Values: A list of options available any time the field is edited (flex fields only). You set up this list using the Edit Options form (on page 1). For more information, see Specify a list of values for a flex field (on page 1) in the N4 Customization manual.
Extra XML Definition: XML overrides, such as table attributes and measured unit field definitions. For more information, see Adding extra XML definitions (on page 1).
The Fields view (on page 1) displays the state of a field at the current scope level. For example, log in at the complex level and override a field at the facility level. When you save your changes and close the Edit Metafield form, the list view at the complex level does not display the new value of the field. Log in at the facility level to see the new value of the field.
Some flex fields have a direct link to fields in XPS to enable you to update these fields from either N4 or from XPS. These fields are:
ufvFlexString05: Corresponds to XPS USRJ field.
ufvFlexString06: Corresponds to XPS USRK field.
ufvFlexString07: Corresponds to XPS USRL field.
ufvFlexString08: Corresponds to XPS USRM field.
ufvFlexString09: Corresponds to XPS USRN field.
ufvFlexString10: Corresponds to XPS USRO field.
unitFlexString11: Corresponds to XPS USRE field.
unitFlexString12: Corresponds to XPS USRF field.
unitFlexString13: Corresponds to XPS USRG field.
unitFlexString14: Corresponds to XPS USRH field.
unitFlexString15: Corresponds to XPS USRI field.
If any of these fields are updated by N4 business logic, such as code extension (Groovy code) or a service event, then this affects when a flex field is changed. Therefore, do not make this field editable in XPS.
